It would have been revealed that Connor develops the attitude he does about Zahra’s autonomy because he knew her mother and witnessed her die in child birth, regretting the things she missed out on by living such a restricted life. This mindset born through fear, as opposed to one born through respect or compassion, is flawed in that it is reactive rather than proactive, it requires suffering to either have happened or be a constant threat.
